Gokyo Lake Everest Base Camp trek is the most popular trekking adventure experience in the Everest Reasion of Nepal. During our Everest Base Camp(EBC) trek, we will get amazing views of the world’s highest peak Everest; along with Lhotse, Makalu and Cho Oyu. Gokyo Lake is blue fresh water lakes in the Everest region of Nepal. Gokyo Lake and Gokyo Ri is popular destination among the travelers. This is one of the lake situated at highest altitude at around 5,000 meters. Gokyo Lakes is located at an altitude of 4,700–5,000 m (15,400–16,400 ft) above sea level. There are about six major lakes in the Everest region, which are among the highest freshwater lakes in the world. Among all the lakes in the Everest region, Thonak Lake is the largest of these lakes.

Best Season for Gokyo Lake Everest base camp Trek

Like other treks in Nepal, Gokyo Lake EBC Trek is most preferably comfort during Spring (March-May) and Autumn (September-November). During these months, the weather remains to be clear, and daytime temperatures remains warm. However this trek is usually possible to trek during the summer/monsoon and winter seasons.

Detailed itinerary for 18 Days Gokyo Lake - Everest Base Camp Trek

Your EBC Trekking adventure begins with your arrival in Kathmandu. Representative from Paradise HImalayan Journey will meet you at Tribhuvan International Airport. and we will help you with your luggage and transportation to your hotel. We don't have any fixed schedule of activities and plans for today so you can take rest in hotel or walk around Thamel in afternoon and evening. Welcome dinner together at evening with Paradise Himalayan Team.

Today we will be sightseeing the religious cultural attractions of Kathmandu valley. Kathmandu Valley popular as one of the Himalayan Shangrilla, Kathmandu city is distinguished by a ancient archeolological heritages, pagoda temples and unique synthesis of Hinduism and Buddhism. Today we will visit four major UNESCO World Heritage sites: the remarkable Swayambhunath (The Monke Temple) and Boudhanath Stupas, Pashupatinath Temple (Hindus sacred Temple), and the world-renowned Kathmandu Durbar Square. While roaming around these heritages you will spot the centuries ago build temples, heritages, pagoda style temples, stone and wooden carved temples. Meanwhile you’ll be able to shop for HImalayan Tea, Coffee, Handmade Products, handcrafted souvenirs and many more. We board a flight to Lukla (2,850m/9,350 ft) early in the morning. It takes 30 minutes to arrive at Lukla airport. Then we trek to Phakding (2650 m/ 8562 ft ) - Walking Distance (6.2km/3.85 miles) - 3 hours.

Trek from Phakding to Namche Bazaar (3,440m/11,285 ft) - Walking Distance (7.4km/4.6 miles) - 6 hours

We start with a steep one-hour climb to the Syangboche (3790m), from where we will slowly ascend towards Khunde. From Khunde, we follow the trail eastwards to Khumjung, at the foot of the sacred peak Khumbila. After enjoying lunch at Khumjung, we gradually climb to Everest View Hotel where we will enjoy the splendid mountain views. Then we descend towards Namche (3540m).

Today after breakfast we start our trek from Namche to Tengboche.

Today after morning breakfast we start our journey to Dingboche. We descend through a beautiful forest then cross the Imja Khola and trek through the village of Pangboche. The route continues through summer pastures to Dingboche. We will spend the night at Dingboche. It is a very relaxing village with lots of mountain views. This is very easy walk and takes about 4 to 5 hours.

After morning breakfast will will start our trekking journey from Dingboche (4350m) to Lobuche. We start with a climb to the chorten trail for about 1 and half hours. Then we get to Thugla at 4600m, we will have lunch here before climbing the steep part of the day’s trek for about one and a half hours.

We will take a 2 hour’s hike up to Gorakshep. First part is nice and easy but one hour later the trail starts to get harder, once we climb about 150m then trail gets better again. Short after we will get to the moraine. Finally we get to 5160m, the world’s highest settlement at Gorakshep. Once we have lunch, we begin our walk to Everest base camp. We will be walking on side ridge of the Khumbu glacier. After walking on the ridge for about one and half hours, we cross the Glacier and into the Everest base camp area. Today we reach Everest base camp at an altitude of 5360m. We will be able to meet and talk to other mountain climbers at the base camp. We can get a good view of Khumbu glacier and Khumbu Ice fall. From there we can also see the big crevasses in the climbing way. After appreciating our own efforts and photographing the achievements, we start our way back to Gorakshep. (6-7 hour)

We will start an early morning hike to Kalapathar. We spend some time enjoying the sunrise on the splendid Himalayan ranges, relishing in a unique view and experience and head back to Lobuche. From Lobuche, few hours hike will take us to Dzongla which is the only place where we can spend the night.

Early in the morning, we start our walk from Dzongla to the Cho-la pass. The walk over the glacier is an enjoyable experience if we can make the trip during the best season otherwise excess snow makes it impossible to cross the pass. As the darkness returns we trek down to Tagnag to spend the night there.

We will start a short day trek abouut 4-5 hours to reach Gokyo. Once we reach Gokyo we will have out lunch. Then we spend the rest of the day exploring the Gokyo valley, glaciers and mesemerizing lakes of the Gokyo valley. You will also enjoy the mesemerizing views of the Himalayan giants like Mt. Everest, Mt. Cho-Oyu, Mt. Lhotse, Mt. Makalu and others.

Today we will hike up to Gokyo RI.Once we reach the pass, we see the astonishing views of the Gokyo valley, the Ngozumpa glacier and a panoramic scene of the Khumbu Himalayan giants. After spending some time there, we make our way down to Dole.

Today we will trek from Dole to Namche Bazaar which takes about six hours. During the course of the day, we cross the Khumjung village while walking on the base of Mount Amadablam. Once we reach Namche Bazaar, we rest and spend the night there.

From Namche, first we make our way towards Phakding which takes about 5-6 hours, and then a leisurely walk takes us to Lukla by evening where we spend the night in a hotel or a Sherpa village.

Today we fly back from Lukla to Kathmandu. Free day at Kathmandu. After we transfer you to hotel. you can spend rest of the day at your choice; feel free to relax or explore the local markets.

Weather in the Himalayas are so dynamic that you may encounter during your trek. Due to the weather, there may be some delays with your return flight from Lukla to Kathmandu. If you are lucky enough you may experience only some hours of delay else the delay can be long enough to wait for the next day too. Keep Calm and have patience. So, we always accumulate a reserve day for these conditions. If your flight schedule is on track, today we will be enjoying the most beautiful and colorful moments in Kathmandu valley. We can spend our leisure time visiting the other UNESCO Heritages situated at eastern part of Kathmandu, the colorful Buddhist Kopan Monastery and the Hindu Changu Narayan Temple.

As today is your last day at Kathmandu, we will be offering you Farewell Dinner followed by Nepali Cuisine Food and Cultural Dance.

Frequently asked Questions about 18 Days Gokyo Lake - Everest Base Camp Trek

The best season is from pre-monsoon springtime (February, March, April, May) and post-monsoon fall (September, October, November). December and January is the winter and is colder and June, July, August is the summer/monsoon, so rain might be an issue.
We suggest warm clothes that includes down jackets, thermal longs & tops, comfortable trekking shoes, t-shirts, fleece, windproof jacket, hat, scarf, gloves. Thamel, the main tourist hub, in Kathmandu has lots of trekking shops with both local and branded where you can also buy these clothing.
Lodges in the Everest trail serves organic and hygienic meals and mostly a typical meal includes daal bhat (rice and lentils), noodles, pasta or potato dishes along with vegetables and egg/chicken/meat dishes. Some desserts like apple pies, pancakes can also be found. Breakfast includes porridge, muesli and toasts with peanut butter and honey.
To avoid any AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) problems our itineraries are carefully designed. AMS normally occurs from 3,600 meters/11,808 feet and above. During the trek you gently and slowly gain altitude with day’s rest for better acclimatizing. Most people will feel some affect of altitude, shortness of breath and possibly light headed which is fairly common. Our experienced guide will be with you who shall advise you how to avoid AMS. Drinking more water, walking slowly, not skipping the acclimatization days is suggested to avoid AMS.
The trek is good for any average people who are moderately fit enough and no previous experience as such is required. Though running, swimming, hiking are recommended before your join your trek. For preparation, you should start training at least two to three months before your trek. The best will be hiking in relatively steep ascents and descents.
The maximum group-size for this trek is 14 people as this group size makes a perfect team with the trek guide can also give attention to each individual time and again.
We use lodges/teahouses which are clean and having basic facilities, and they also provide quilt or blankets. The toilets in the lodges have essential and basic facilities and always outside the room.
Himalayan weathers are rather hard to predict. Generally nights are colder than the days. In winter (Dec, Jan, Feb) is colder but days are beautiful with clear skies. A bit of snowfall is expected in winter In spring (Mar-Jun) the average temperature is 17 degrees C with a maximum of 25 degrees C during sunny days and a minimum of -15 degrees C in the morning and at night for areas above 4000 meters. In monsoon (Jun-Aug) the maximum temperature averages to 25 degrees C during sunny days with a minimum -15 degrees C in the morning and night at areas above 4000 meters. The average temperature tends to be around a comfortable 18 degrees C. In autumn (Sep-Nov), the average temperature during the fall is 15 degrees C with a maximum temp of 20 degrees C during sunny days and a minimum of -10 degrees C in the morning and at night for areas above 4000 meters altitude.
We have experienced trek guides who have been in the field for a long time and know the area where you will be trekking. They are also government recognized trek guides and well trained in mountain first-aid plus friendly and helpful individuals. They are also insured during the trek.
You can store your luggage in your hotel for free. Take along the essential items for your trek and the rest can be left at the hotel, later on claim after returning back from trek.
Major places like Lukla/Namche has hot shower and other areas have hot water in a bucket. The cost comes to US$3-4 per shower.
In the cities like Kathmandu, yes, but during trekking only cash is accepted. Please change into Nepali rupees before heading for trek.
ATMs are available only in Namche and Lukla but it’s service might not work or may be out of cash. So changing into rupees before trek is suggested.
Landline telephones are available in most of the villages along the trek route from which you can make international calls. Mobile phone services are available and even at the Everest Base Camp but the reception quality varies depending upon the locations. Internet facilities can be found but is expensive.
Charging your cameras etc comes to about Nepali rupees 200-1000 approx.
While trekking in the Himalayas insurance is highly recommend covering both medical and evacuation. You should also be careful of the insurance policy while buying the insurance as some insurance companies may have special exception of evacuation from certain altitude only.
Boiled water is available at the lodges. Bottled water will cost US$2 at lower places and US$4 at higher places per liter. If you have brought purifying aid you can use them in normal tap or spring water.
