Lo Manthang is considered as the Last Forbidden kingdom in Nepal as this region was part of the Tibetan past, similar to Tibetan Plateau. Lo-Manthang Mustang trek starts from Jomsom, following the northern ancient trading route to the Tibet along the banks of Kali Gandaki river. This trekking route is very famous trekking trail and the travelers get chance to enjoy the awe-inspiring views of Mt. Nilgiri, Mt. Annapurna, Mt. Dhaulagiri and other Himalayan peaks.

15 Days Lo Manthang trek is an immersive trekking experience in the northern part of Nepal. Travelers need to walk about 5 to 6hours daily during the Upper Mustang Lo Manthang trek.

As Lo Manthang region is considered as the Last Forbidden Kingdom of Nepal, this region is rich in culture and tradition which is highly influenced by the Tibetan culture. Lo Manthang lies in between the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) of China in the north and Dalome, a rural municipality of Mustang district in the South.

Mustang Lo Manthang trek is one of the fascinating treks in Mustang region with an opportunity to view the awesome breathtaking landscape of mountains, terrains and Himalayas, Lo Manthang is was the capital of Mustang in the past and yet there is Mustang king palace, old monasteries and nomad lands. which will eventually fascinate you. As Upper mustang is the Last Forbidden Kingdom of Nepal, trekking to this region requires special trekking permit through government registered Nepal trekking agency.

Upper Mustang Trek Permits

As Upper mustang is restricted area for general visitors, you need to grab a special permit to enter the Upper Mustang region. Following are some of the checklist for Lo-Manthang Upper Mustang Permit:

  • Passport must be valid for at least six months.
  • Original passport and current visa are required when applying for the permits.
  • Cost is $500 per person for 10 days, additional $50 per person, per day beyond 10 days.
  • Scanned copy of the passport-sized photograph is must
  • One printed passport-sized photograph is required for ACAP permit (costs $20 per person).
  • At least two trekkers in the group.
  • The permit must be obtained through, and trekkers must go with, a Nepal registered trekking company.

Day-wise Itinerary
Detailed itinerary for 15 Days Trek to Upper Mustang : Lo Manthang

On your day one, we welcome you to the city of temples and history, Kathmandu. Today you will be welcomed by our friendly staff at the Tribhuvan International Airport. 

From here, you will be safely transferred to your designated hotel. If you are not too jet-lagged from the flight, try exploring the city for a while. There are plenty of things to see in Kathmandu.

Take some rest and gear up for an exciting journey ahead.

Accommodation: Overnight in Hotel at Kathmandu

Today we will be sightseeing the religious cultural attractions of Kathmandu valley. Kathmandu Valley popular as one of the Himalayan Shangrilla, Kathmandu city is distinguished by a ancient archeolological heritages, pagoda temples and unique synthesis of Hinduism and Buddhism. Today we will visit four major UNESCO World Heritage sites: the remarkable Swayambhunath (The Monkey Temple) and Boudhanath Stupas, Pashupatinath Temple (Hindus sacred Temple), and the world-renowned Kathmandu Durbar Square.

While roaming around these heritages you will spot the centuries ago build temples, heritages, pagoda style temples, stone and wooden carved temples.

Meanwhile you’ll be able to shop for HImalayan Tea, Coffee, Handmade Products, handcrafted souvenirs and many more. If you want to enjoy the Nightlife of Thamel, you can let us know so our guide will help to find the perfect place to hangout  with live musics in evening.

After breakfast, we drive to Pokhara. After a 7-hours drive in a private Van/Vehicle, we reach Pokhara. You will take a rest in Hotel and after some rest.

Early in the morning, we will fly from Pokhara to Jomsom, (approximately 20 minutes). Reaching Jomsom we assemble our bikes and breakfast in Jomsom.

After breakfast at Jomsom, we drive to Chele (3050m).

Today after breakfast at Chele, we start our trek to Geling (3500m)

Today after breakfast, we start our trek to  Lo Manthang (3840 meters). Lo Manthang region is considered as the Last Forbidden Kingdom of Nepal, this region is rich in culture and tradition which is highly influenced by the Tibetan culture.

Today we visit to Namgyal Gompa and Tingkhar. 

Today after breakfast, we start our trek to Dhi(3410 meters)

Today will be an early flight from Jomsom to Pokhara. You will see many mesmerizing views of Dhaulagiri and Annapurna ranges. The flight is 15 minutes long that goes over the deepest gorge in the world. In Pokhara, the climate is warmer and the environment and atmosphere are delightful there.

You can enjoy the scenery of the Phewa, Rupa and Begnas Lake. You can go boating and visit the Taal Barahi Temple. You can go rafting and some adventures like Gupteshwor Mahadev Cave, Bat Cave and, Mahendra Cave. There are many restaurants, café, and pubs that you can go to and enjoy other adventures as well. 

Today we trace back to Kathmandu, we reach Kathmandu in about 6-7 hours. If you want to explore the Thamel and Kathmandu Durbar Square in evening, you can. As today is your last day at Kathmandu with us, we will have Farewell Dinner together at Thamel.

Frequently asked Questions about 15 Days Trek to Upper Mustang : Lo Manthang

Mustang Lo Manthang trek is comparatively easy trek as compared with other treks. However, good physical is required for the trip. This trek gradually ascend from low altitude from Jomsom (2467m) so some trekkers feels a-bit challenging during this trek as some may encounter the altitude sickness
The best time for Upper Mustang and Lo-Manthang trek is Autumn (mid-September to November) and Spring (March to May). However this trek can be organized throughout the year and depending on your holiday frame. The weather is rainy during the months of June to August (monsoon) and the Himalayas may not clear and trekking trails are slippery . Winter season (December – February) remains very cold and this region gets covered with snow.
